During a monitoring inspection of Northern Education Trust North Shore Academy, carried out on 6 November 2019, Inspectors found that “senior leaders and the Trust are taking effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement, in order for the school to become good”.
The report highlighted many areas where the academy has accelerated the pace of improvement and is confidently addressing areas of improvement previously raised, such as the quality of teaching and support for students with special education needs and/or disabilities, saying “staff are attentive to the needs of students with SEND, working closing together to provide focused support. The effects of the improved support are reflected in much higher rates of attendance for students with SEND. There has also been a drastic reduction in incidents of exclusion”.
It was noted that leaders have intensified efforts to improve attendance of all students, alongside wider improvements to teaching and behaviour, which has resulted in “a school where the majority of students want to attend, including disadvantaged students”. Inspectors observed improved behaviour around the school site, commenting on the calm and purposeful atmosphere, and the obvious respect between students and teachers.
Students who may find school difficult are given specialised support, through The Bridge and the Personalised Learning Centre, where a positive and productive atmosphere results in students being able to catch up with their work and get back into lessons. Inspectors said: “This specific support, combined with high standards of behaviour, has contributed to a significant reduction in the incidents of exclusion, which have reduced by 96% over two years. Students confirmed this picture of improvement, commenting upon improvements in the culture and day to day working of the school”.
Inspectors praised the leadership and governance of the academy, noting that the Chair of the Academy Council had a strong grasp on the school’s progress, and the Academy Council had the expertise to hold leaders to account. They recognised that the school received regular support from Trust directors and leaders on all aspects of its work, that Trust leaders had built an ethos where working for the school and for the trust are one and the same, and how this joint working had supported the substantial improvements made.

We have introduced many initiatives, and our students are continually growing in confidence which fuels their development and achievements. Students are now proud of their school, and we are proud of them”.
